visiting toronto

Important: British citizens travelling to Canada are required to get electronic travel authorisation (similar to a visa). It costs less than £10 and is easily obtained online: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp. You will not be allowed into the country without it.

Here is a bit of guidance to help make the most of your time in Toronto (when you aren’t hanging out with us that is)! While most people associate Canada with cold weather (and quite rightly so), Toronto is quite warm during the summer months. Expect temperatures to average around 25 degrees Celsius or higher, but take comfort in the fact that there is air conditioning almost everywhere.

Getting there: There are two main airports in Toronto. Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) is the main international airport and about 40 minutes' drive outside the city. There is public transport but we’d recommend getting a taxi/Uber for ease. If you are flying from a closer destination (e.g. NYC) you can get a flight into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) which is right downtown.

Accommodation: Below are some suggested hotels and neighbourhoods to stay in if you are looking at Air B&Bs. We would suggest booking soon as August is a busy time for visitors.

  • Thompson Hotel
  • The Hyatt
  • The New Four Seasons
  • Hotel Le Germain (two locations, both are excellent)
  • The Drake

Food and Drink

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to drinking and dining in Toronto, but here are some suggestions. In our view, the Italian and Mexican restaurants in Toronto are of a higher quality than in London and we have included a few here. If you love Oysters and seafood, do indulge while in Canada, it is all incredibly fresh and delicious. When it comes to drinks – you won’t find a pub on every corner but you will find a plethora of exceptional cocktail bars and patios (read: beer gardens) to help you enjoy the summer weather. Here are some suggestions!
